Catherine Olien

Catherine Olien studies the art and archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean. Her research focuses on the reception of ancient Greece and the Near East in 19th-century Europe. Her work is driven by concerns and questions stemming from the fields of critical museum studies and the historiography of art history. Her dissertation, "Ancient Cyprus in the Universal Museum: A Comparative Study of European Reception ca. 1860-1914," explores the collection, classification, and display of ancient Cypriot sculpture by the Louvre, British, and Berlin Museums.
